Watch out for phone charges from TiVo
There is an interesting story posted on a CBS affiliate site that talks about one man’s experience with his TiVo. Neil (the man from the article) cancelled his TiVo subscription, but he left the unit plugged into the phone line.
While he was away from home, his unit started making calls to TiVo’s service centers (for guide updates and what not) and over 2 months he was hit with close to a $2000 phone bill.
TiVo did eventually agree to pay for the bills, but according to the technical support at TiVo there is a clause in the service agreement that says that they are not responsible for any calls.
Apparently this is a rare case, but it does happen. The story goes on to suggest that you unplug the phone line from the unit after the initial activation since it shouldn’t be needed any more.
This story is just something to keep in mind for all of you TiVo users out there.
